Overview of the School of Tourism and Event Management, SIFT
SIFT School of Tourism and Event Management is among the established tourism faculties of universities in Shanghai. Guided by the motto of “dedication, unification, democracy and innovation”, the school has developed a staff both good at academic research and teaching practice, and has achieved a favorable reputation and status in the fields of academic studies and community service.
The well-structured faculty staff has demonstrated a strong consciousness of innovation in theoretical studies and practical manipulations in terms of subject research and student teaching. Some professors enjoy a prestigious status and reputation in the subject fields in Shanghai and other areas in China. Most teachers have developed a well-balanced competence in the aspects of academic studies, teaching practice, industrial experience, and international communicative abilities.
The school consists of two departments, namely, the Department of Event Management (a Sino-German Cooperative Program) and the Department of Tourism Management. Both departments are delivering courses for bachelor’s degrees.
The course of Event Management is among the first group of such courses that have been approved by China’s Ministry of Education, and it is also the first in China to be taught jointly by Chinese and overseas teachers in the form of a Sino-German cooperative program.
Over recent years, the school’s staff teachers have completed several research projects supported by the National Social Science Fund and the Shanghai Social Science Fund. The teachers have been playing an active role in key consultation research projects of Shanghai Municipal government. Fruitful research outcome has been achieved in forms of monographs, books and industry development planning reports, for example, The Eleventh 5-year Plan for Tourism Development in Shanghai, the research report of a government consultation project presided by the school’s staff.
The school pays much attention to the communication and news exchange with overseas counterparts and industrial connections. A supplementary team of guest professors and lecturers, mainly renowned scholars, concerned government administrators, and successful entrepreneurs, has been formed to reinforce the links between school education and industrial practice.
The school centers its educational activities around the mission of bringing up talents for the tourism and event management industries. It aims to develop the students into high-quality talents with applicable capacities and professional expertise. The educational activities of the school are featured with stresses laid on the development of student capabilities of inter-cultural communication, industrial practice, and case analysis. Students learn through not only class-room teaching, but also overseas study experience, entrepreneurship education and practice, fieldwork and internship, and lectures by and interactions with industrial contacts. The educational activities are designed and carried out to enable the students to be creative and innovative, good at communication and team work, and conscious of their social responsibilities.
The Department of Event Management
The department’s course of International Event Management (IEMs) is jointly operated and delivered by Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade and Hochschule Osnabrück (University of Applied Sciences). The course aims to train students into qualified managerial staff of modern management mindset and operational skills for international exhibition enterprises and concerned government departments. IEMs course has introduced 15 modules from Hochschule Osnabrück.
The teaching team is made up of prestigious German professors and SIFT teachers, who jointly deliver all the introduced modules in English. And the teaching style embodies advanced teaching methodology and practices, and focuses on developing practical capabilities of the students.
The department owns a studio for internship and a company----Wonder Fairs, which is owned, operated and managed by the students themselves. Besides classroom teaching, the IEMs course also builds up close links with the industry of event management. Fieldwork, internship, cooperative programs are carried out with the participation of the industry.

Graduates of the department are highly commented by the HR department of the industry as having acquired global vision, adequate English proficiency, and sophisticated event management operational skills. The performance of the in-service graduates has earned them prestige in the employment market.
